How Long Does Perfume Actually Last?

By Grand Hues  •   3 minute read

Short answer: an eau de cologne lasts about 2-4 hours on skin, eau de toilette 4-6 hours, eau de parfum 6-8 hours, and extrait or parfum 8 hours or more. Those are averages. A person with dry skin in a cold climate will get significantly more wear time from the same bottle than someone with oily skin in summer heat.

Wear times by concentration

Concentration Oil content Average wear on skin Best for
Eau de cologne 2-5% 2-4 hours Daytime, summer, cheap layering
Eau de toilette 5-15% 4-6 hours Everyday office wear
Eau de parfum 15-20% 6-8 hours All-day wear, evenings
Parfum / Extrait 20-40% 8-12+ hours Cold weather, all-night wear

Why perfume lasts longer on clothes than on skin

Fabric holds fragrance molecules and releases them slowly, while skin absorbs them and then actively metabolises them. If you want the scent to last through a long day, spray the same fragrance on a scarf or the collar of your jacket about 20 minutes before you leave.

What actually makes perfume last longer

  • Moisturise before you spray. Unscented moisturiser on the pulse points gives the oil something to sit on. Skin that is dry drinks the fragrance and disappears.
  • Do not rub your wrists together. Rubbing breaks down the top notes and warms the fragrance into nothing. Spray and let it dry.
  • Two sprays, not ten. More spray does not mean more scent. It means more smell at the start and nothing at hour four.
  • Target pulse points. Wrists, neck, behind the ears, inner elbows. These are warm and help the scent project.
  • Keep the bottle in the dark. Heat and light break down top notes. A closed, cool drawer beats a sunlit windowsill.
  • Layer with matching products. An unscented body lotion or a shower gel from the same line, applied before the perfume, adds hours.

Is a 15ml bottle worth it?

Yes, and this is where maths helps. A 15ml bottle gives roughly 250-300 sprays. At two sprays per wear, that is about 125 wears - roughly four months of daily use. Our Roxelis 15ml coffee and patchouli perfume is the most portable bottle in the line, and the 10ml roller in the Chasseurs de la Mer set is genuinely pocket-sized for a carry-on bag.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my perfume not last on me?

Three common reasons: oily skin, a shower right before applying, and rubbing the application point. Dry skin plus moisturiser plus a spray on fabric will fix most of it.

Is eau de parfum better than cologne?

Not better - longer lasting. Eau de parfum has a higher concentration of fragrance oils, so it lasts 6-8 hours versus 2-4 for cologne. Our cologne vs eau de parfum guide explains the differences in plain terms.

Do perfume oils last longer than eau de parfum?

Usually yes, because they are closer to the skin in oil concentration. They also smell different - more skin-like, less bright.

How many sprays should I use?

Two to four sprays for most people, more for a stronger eau de parfum. Start with two, wait 15 minutes, and add if needed.

Can I make perfume last longer without buying a stronger one?

Yes - moisturise first, spray on fabric, do not rub, and store the bottle away from heat and light. See the fragrance collection for our full range of concentrations.
