The Most Asked Beauty Questions, Answered

The questions we are asked most

These are the questions that come up again and again in our support inbox and in beauty forums. We answer them here in full so you do not have to wait for a reply to decide.

Is at home microneedling safe or am I delusional?

For most people, yes, if you keep three rules: 0.25mm or shallower, disinfect the tool before and after every session, and roll every 3-4 days rather than daily. The problems people read about online almost always come from reused needles or pressing too hard, not from the technique itself. If you have active acne or a skin condition, check with a dermatologist first.

How often should I use a microneedle roller?

Every 3 to 4 days to start at 0.25mm, moving to daily only once your skin has adapted without redness, flaking or stinging. If your skin is still flushed the next morning, wait. Over-rolling is the most common reason people end up with a damaged barrier and no results.

Derma roller vs derma pen?

If you are starting out, use a roller - it glides instead of jabbing, it is faster, and it is far more forgiving. A pen wins on precision (single lines, deeper work) and adjustable depth, but that is a month-6 tool, not a week-1 tool. One tool used consistently beats three tools used occasionally.

Can I mix retinol, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide?

You can, and the order matters more than the mixing. Damp skin, then hyaluronic acid, wait a minute, then niacinamide, wait a minute, then retinoid last on dry skin. If you are new to retinoids, start every other night for two weeks. The combination that causes trouble is vitamin C plus retinoid on the same routine for reactive skin.

Best Hyaluronic acid serum?

Look for a hyaluronic acid serum with glycerin alongside it, applied to damp skin and sealed with moisturiser on top. Hyaluronic acid on dry skin can leave you feeling tighter than before. If your skin is dehydrated and reactive, 5% niacinamide is a steadier daily choice.

Hyaluronic acid serum dries out skin

That happens when it is applied to dry skin, because it pulls water from the deeper layers. Apply it to damp skin, then put a moisturiser on top to hold the water in. If your skin still feels tight, use it once a day instead of twice and follow with a richer cream.

How long do scents tend to last on you?

Roughly 2-4 hours for an eau de cologne, 4-6 for an eau de toilette, 6-8 for an eau de parfum, 8+ for a parfum. Three things move the number: dry skin holds fragrance longer than oily skin, fabric holds it far longer than skin, and rubbing your wrists together destroys the top notes in about 30 seconds.

Do people actually get 8+ hours from fragrances?

Rarely from a spray-on cologne - that is normal, not a fault in the product. If you want 8+ hours you need a higher concentration, or the layering tricks: moisturise first, spray on fabric, do not rub, and keep the bottle away from heat and light.

Best sandalwood fragrance?

Look for sandalwood as a base rather than the whole story. Paired with citrus it is clean and easy to wear every day; paired with woods and pepper it gets evening weight. Pure medicinal sandalwood is a miss for most people.

What are your opinions on 10-15ml bottles?

They are genuinely practical - about 250-300 sprays, roughly four months of daily wear, and they fit in a pocket. They are also the right size for trying a scent before committing. The trade-off is price per millilitre, which is higher than a full-size bottle.

Are minis better than full size?

For trying a scent, yes. For daily wear, no - you end up paying more per millilitre. Buy the small size to test, then move up to 30ml or 50ml once you know you like it.

How do I make my perfume last longer?

Unscented moisturiser on the pulse points before spraying, spray on a scarf or collar rather than only skin, never rub your wrists together, two sprays rather than ten, and keep the bottle out of heat and light. Those five changes reliably add a couple of hours.

Lip oil vs lip gloss?

They do different jobs. A lip oil hydrates and gives a natural just-bitten finish; a gloss adds reflective shine over the top. If you dislike the sticky feeling of traditional gloss, a lip oil is the better choice. The best routine is balm at night, oil on damp lips in the morning, colour over that.

Are you Team Lip Stain or Team Lip Gloss or Team Lip Oils?

All three, in a specific order - and that is what makes it work. Balm first (repair), oil or serum second (hydration and fullness), colour third, gloss last if you want shine. Skipping the balm is why some people think lip oils do not work.

Do Lip Plumping Products Actually Work?

They work for a short time. The plumping ingredients cause mild, controlled swelling that lasts 15-60 minutes, and they work best on lips that are already hydrated and slightly dry. On already-swollen or irritated lips they can make things worse. A hyaluronic acid lip oil gives a similar fuller look with no tingle.

Best lip balm for extremely dry and chapped lips?

Look for an occlusive balm - beeswax, shea, mineral oil or petrolatum - with no heavy fragrance, and apply it thickly at night for a week. Tinted balms work just as well because the balm is doing the treatment. Skip lip scrubs, they make flaking worse for several days.

Best body wash for body odor?

One that cleanses thoroughly without leaving a heavy film, used properly. Body odor is mostly bacteria breaking down sweat, so the goal is reducing the bacteria load rather than masking the smell. Wash underarms, groin and feet, dry properly, and wash your towel and clothes too - that is usually what people miss.

Nail art pens that are reputable?

Dual-tip sets are worth the money: a chisel tip for line work and a bullet tip for fills in the same colour, so you can do a whole design without switching tools. Water-based ink is gentler on nails and washes off with soap; acrylic ink is more opaque and permanent but needs remover.

Do nail art markers last?

One to two days on bare nails, three to five over a base coat, and up to a week under a clear top coat. The top coat is the single biggest upgrade. Water-based markers are gentler but wear faster; acrylic ink lasts longer and needs more effort to remove.

Can I use a nail art pen to colour in my press ons?

Yes, it is a popular technique. Use a light touch and seal well, because press-on edges lift more easily than natural nails.

Niacinamide vs retinol: which one first?

Niacinamide if you are new to actives - it is well tolerated and you can use it every day. Retinol is the stronger option for texture and fine lines, but it needs a slow introduction and it makes skin photosensitive, so sunscreen is non-negotiable. Many people use niacinamide in the morning and retinol at night.

Is microneedling the same thing as dermarolling?

Effectively yes. A dermaroller is a microneedling tool you roll over the skin, and a dermapen is the same idea with needles you stamp vertically. The important difference is depth: 0.25mm at home, deeper only with a professional.
